Chapter Eight
I'm not panicking. Even though it appears we are now hunting down a serial killer. I am not going to panic. I'm going to put my panic in a jar, and I'm going to seal that jar, and I'm going to stick that jar in a safe, and I'm going to lock that safe, and I'm going to drop that safe into the Pacific Ocean, and then I'm going to write a book and call it the Panic in a Jar Method and never panic again.
No panicking.
When I get back to my car, I find Vanessa meditating.
"I talked to Lolly," I say as I slide into my seat. "It wasn't suicide. She doesn't remember the details, and she doesn't want to know them ⦠I ⦠tried Lux ⦠again ⦠and she didn't answer!" Okay. I'm still not panicking.
What I am is beyond panicked. I'm in an altered freak-out state where the world is spinning and I can't feel my feet.
"Breathe, Zoe." Vanessa is showing me how it's supposed to work by inhaling and exhaling slowly. "Release the toxins and pull in purity."
"I don't understand what you're saying!" I grip the steering wheel and concentrate on the BMW symbol. "I think we need to explore the possibility that whoever killed Lolly also killed Britney/Brinkley and Lux and is the person you were talking to when you died. That's a lot of people!"
"Are you telling me that we're hunting down a serial killer?" Vanessa sounds way too excited about this.
So much so that I have to ask, "Do you even know what a serial killer is?"
"I'm going to pretend you didn't ask me that. Can you imagine what the headline will read if my last act here on earth was catching a serial killer? Wait. Wait." Vanessa pretends to splash water on her face. "I've lost focus. Brian. He is our main priority. On to step two. Dominick."
"Right. First I want to drive by the Ishmaels' house and get a lay of the land."
"Why do you keep inserting steps into our nine-step plan? We're taking too long!"
"Because I want to find Brian!"
"Why are you yelling at me!"
"Because I'm stressed out!"
"Then put your stress in a receptacle!"
"You can shove your receptacle where the sun doesn't shine!"
Vanessa inhales. "You take that back!"
"No!"
She shocks me, and I settle down. Feels more like a little jolt of energy, certainly not the crippling production Mr. Sanders and Mr. Ishmael made it out to be. Oddly enough, the shock forces my brain to refocus. I'm good. Now, Brian. "We are going to drive by the Ishmaels' house on our way to see Dominick." Except, I don't know where the Ishmaels live.
Time to call Mike.
I put him on speaker. "Please tell me the future has changed?" I ask as soon as he answers.
"Not yet. It's the same, and it's not as foggy anymore."
"What does that mean?" Vanessa asks.
Mike doesn't respond. "Vanessa wants to know what that means."
"I think it's becoming more set in stone."
"Fan-freaking-tastic!" Vanessa drops her head into her hands.
